Axemen 2-1

After 3 games we sit at 2-1 with our only loss coming to St. FX Friday November 18, 2011 by 1 in overtime. Fans were treated to a very entertaining affair. The game showcased an up and down pace and crucial possessions down the stretch. Justin Boutilier made a lay up as time expired to tie the game at 72 to push it into an extra frame. We then came out firing in the extra period and went up by a quick 5 points and things looked promising for the axemen. Shane Coupland had other plans and hit 4 threes in the overtime to lift his team to a 90-89 victory. Despite 28 turnovers by us we were able to hang around most of the game with a huge night from Owen Klassen, posting 26 points and 19 rebounds. Owen is starting to assert himself as one of the most dominant players in the AUS. Tyler Scott chipped in with 18 and continues to play big minutes and make big shots for our team. We also welcomed back 3 year guard Anthony Sears from a pre-season ankle injury and was able to play 24 minutes and score 14 points. The axemen showed some bounce back ability by turning around less than 24 hours and beat the UNB Varsity Reds 80-54. The 2-1 record gives us 8 points and ties us atop the AUS with UPEI and St. FX and UNB. We head to PEI this weekend for our final two games before the Holiday break to take on the UPEI Panthers. The Panthers are currently undefeated in league play under new coach Tim Kendrick.
