Dave Smart - winning with simplicity

Get opposite, make it look like you are going to use the screen, then try hard to reject and go opposite that post. Every once and in a while you get a chance to reject it and then the defender guarding the ball has to jump to cut it off and now we can set the screen lower, not to mention that, that the big might have to come over if he thinks the guard is not going to be able to cut off the reject. Same thing goes if we are downing it, take two steps here to use go where the defense wants you to go and then try and get to a naked ball screen. It is a half second, it is because of the details, if you aren't

5 things to focus on:

Defense:
- transition d
- ball screen d

Offense
- Quarter court
- ball screen must dos
- Transition must dos

BASE - ball screen offense.

Spacing is a coaching philosophy, we dive 2 guys.

Every day is a player development day as an opposed to a team development day.

Ball screen with their weakest, who is most uncomfortable if they switch.

The ball handler has to pick a side he is going to attack and stick with it so that the read is easy for the big, if you snake late or go another way then you will take your big completely out of the play.

If is being set with a non shooter, then we are going to set it at the elbow extended.

If they hard hedge and deny the reversal, then go back towards the ball side because that guy is lifting now, and now that you have him its a short closeout, or wide open three, or if they are tagging from the two side, then hit the corner guy (shouldn't be anyone within 30 feet of him) or hit the big because he is wide open because the corner guys check is too far away. And vs. that 'hard hedge' the ball handler has to go at that top foot of the hedge guy.

It's not about the slides - it's about what you remember, what can you recall???? "Can you sned me the slides?" A: "I can't, but if you don't remember what i am telling you right now, they won't help you."

Get assistant coaches to watch the "point of attack", I'll watch off the ball. Everyone wants

The ball handler on penetration has to look for himself when he is penetrating for as long as he can, and when he can't find anything else for himself, then he has to look for his rolling big for as long as possible (sometimes the tag guy leaves the big a little early to get back to a the shooter and you can get a lot of layups on that), and then we can get into "jump stop" stuff and then look for the kick out. The guys off the ball have to lift very high so that their checks have to go very far to help on the rolling big.

Redefining fun - if you want to play competitively, fun has to be hard work. How does hard work build into your fun.

coaching responsibilities - Someone watch point of attack.

Head Coach = off the ball and whatever we are working on

Assistant coaches
1. Off the ball opposite head coach
2. On the ball offense
3. on the ball defense
4. Rebounding

Head coach is the only guy who can stop practice but assistant coaches can sub anyone off at any point.

On the ball opposite head coach
On the ball same has head coach
Rebounding

Read the feet -> post d, communicate the screen,

Make them hate "quitting" you can't quit when you are done by 20. If you quit in a drill and lose, then you have to run a lot, if it is close then maybe 5 pushups.
